Our last day of this beautiful vacation. 🌞

As usual during our holidays, some days we plan our tours and other days we wing it, letting the day and the universe decide our journey. Today, we let the universe decide for us.

In the morning, we left our accommodation to experience a wonderful, authentic Sri Lankan meal. After finishing our food, we noticed a park just across the road named Cornwall Park in Auckland, New Zealand. 🌳

When we checked online, it showed beautiful landscapes and greenery that seemed to merge with the flawless blue sky, alongside sheep and cows roaming around. Sheep and cows in a park, right in the middle of an urban location? Isn’t that something! We knew we had to experience this gem, and it did not disappoint us. 🐄🐑

The location we entered from ended quite soon and brought us to an exit at a main road. We crossed over and entered the actual park to experience its pristine beauty and meet the animals we had seen online. The moment I stepped in, the rush of fresh air felt incredibly real. I could not believe a place like this existed.

People were walking with their families or jogging while watching these adorable animals. Visitors are welcome to move across the fences, walk past them and enjoy a close-up look, while completely respecting their safety, space, comfort and boundaries—which is exactly what everyone did.

While dogs and their owners walked on one side of the fences, the cows and sheep were on the other, living their own peaceful lives. 🌾

So, why am I conflicted now? What did I find? 💔

The Reality Behind the Beauty

This is a working farm. 🚜

To be honest, I don’t know if I truly wanted to know that at the time. For a brief moment, I desperately wanted a win. I wanted to celebrate the fact that these animals were kept in humane conditions—not stuck in filthy cages, unable to move, separate from their babies, or deprived of love and freedom. Seeing them with my own eyes running around freely, the young ones playing and hopping through the lavish green fields while the adults lay peacefully as the younglings jumped up and down on them, made my heart melt. I would be lying if I said I didn’t tear up a bit. Tears of joy, of course. 🥹

Watching the innocent lambs run and leap across the open fields—a beautiful display of life that makes the ultimate reality so deeply painful to hold.

It was the cutest thing to witness: when the younglings could not find their mothers, they called out, and the mums replied sweetly so their little ones could find their way back to their warmth. Cheeky little minions. 🌲

I sat there for I don’t know how long, staring at this wonderland. Time flew like a bird, making hours feel like mere minutes. We still hadn’t finished exploring this never-ending, breathtaking land, and we had started our journey clear back in the morning.

So, what happened next? 🔎

I ended up researching to find out if this area was an animal sanctuary or a regular farm. It is a regular farm. This means these very cows and sheep are regularly sold for meat, wool, and leather.

Without recounting the entire background and data:

  • Lambs and sheep are sold for meat and leather when they are just 7 to 12 months old (under one year of age).
  • Breeding ewes are sold when they are roughly 5 to 6 years old, as soon as their time for breeding and grazing maintenance comes to an end.
  • In the meantime, the sheep and lambs are used for wool production until their time on the farm is over.
  • Cattle and calves are sold for meat between 18 to 30 months of age when they are no longer able to breed, while heifers can begin breeding from as young as 7 to 8 months old.

Why is this devastating? Only a vegan or an animal lover can truly understand. Every day, we fight with our souls, minds, and actions to bring a better life to species who are unable to speak or give consent to what happens to them. 🕊️

Processing this devastation while remembering their happy, kind souls caused me to break down crying. I stared at the ceiling for hours. These are the moments when you feel completely alone in the world, with no one to speak to who understands exactly what you are going through. If you try to open up, you are often met with excuses about why you shouldn’t be vegan, or you are made a mockery of by anyone lacking compassion and empathy. 😔

I kept asking God and myself: Why? Do we take away their homes and lives just for a moment of pleasure and greed? Are we that desensitised to the world? Will we only wake up if a similar situation happens to us? For a moment, I felt like I was losing hope in humanity, and I lost the will to write.

I had to intentionally bring myself back and find that hope. I started remembering those same faces and the genuine joy I experienced alongside those animals, and I found my way back. 🌟

A History of Compassion

I deeply appreciate the fact that a place like this exists in terms of its nature and historical legacy. This park was a generous and beautiful gift from Sir John Logan Campbell in 1901 to the people of New Zealand, completely free for everyone to enjoy. The people of New Zealand still honour his wishes to this day. 🏛️

Additionally, during World War II in 1942, this very park was used as a hospital that treated 23,411 wounded and sick patients. By 1945, the facility transitioned into an obstetric, gynaecological, and geriatric unit, delivering around 50,000 babies by 1963. It became a women’s hospital and a true respite for people in need. This rich history shows that deep compassion and kindness absolutely exist in our world. We just need to extend that exact same compassion and kindness toward animals. 🏥❤️

Wherever you go in New Zealand, you accidentally discover these endless, beautiful, natural landscapes that have a way of healing your soul and your heart. It truly healed me, and I returned home as a whole new person, which I am incredibly grateful for. 🌱

I pray from the bottom of my heart that the wonders of Mother Nature remain protected and that people begin to realise the intrinsic value of animal lives. I hope this is just the beginning of a new world where animals and people live harmoniously and peacefully without hatred or violence—moving toward a world full of vegans and animal lovers. 🌎🐾

To honour my entire experience and what I learned, I have decided to remember this place as a path between heaven and the human world. 🕊️
